Belize is a beautiful country that is home to some of the best snorkeling & diving in the world!
Ambergris Caye
While there are many places around Belize to snorkel, we’ll feature information on snorkeling in Ambergris Caye, which is an island off the main coast of Belize.
Ambergris Caye is an island located off the eastern side of Belize and is the epicenter of tourism for the country. Reaching the island can be done by either a ferry ride (1 1/2 hr.) or a flight with Tropic Air (15 minutes). Either option will drop you in the main town of San Pedro.
San Pedro is a great place to visit while your staying in Ambergris Caye, as they this is where majority of the shops and restaurants are located. As for hotel accommodations, I recommend staying further away from town, rather than in it or directly next to it. You’ll notice almost immediately upon reaching San Pedro that it can get really overcrowded with tourists, so pick a spot a little further up the island for more peace and relaxation for the rest of your trip.
Snorkeling at Mexican Rocks
The reef known as The Mexican Rocks sits right off shore of Ambergris Caye. On our trip we stayed at the Costa Blu adults only Hotel and it took us 10 minutes by boat to get there. We booked a private snorkel tour directly through the hotel, as it was easier than renting a boat for the day. Our guide was awesome and really took the time to point out all the different fish and even find hidden ones in the reef!
The thing I really appreciated about snorkeling in Belize was how clear the water was! You can see in the video above that the coral changed color throughout, depending on if the sun was shining through the clouds or not. We’ve snorkeled in so many locations and it really kills the experience if the sun is hiding and it’s too dark to really see the reef, but we never had that issue in Belize!
The sole reason we vacationed in Belize was simply because of the world class snorkeling. Make sure to find some time for snorkeling on your next vacation there!
